Japan Education Forum for Sustainable Development Goals (JEF for SDGs)

Education 2030 is adopted in 2015 after Jomtien Declaration and the Dakar Framework for Action. An international framework plays a significant role in sharing the same recognition internationally and achieving the challenges; however, it is sometimes claimed that an international framework and domestic priorities are different. Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the specific local needs to support by also taking into account an international framework.

First, keynote speakers will provide an interpretation of Education 2030 and how to develop education cooperation framework. In the following sessions, speakers and participants will discuss; 1) challenges in achieving SDG4 and implementing Education 2030 action framework and 2) how diverse policy-making and implementing actors (organizations) can cooperate. This forum shall provide an opportunity to reflect on previous issues and deepen the discussion. Moreover, the forum will also discuss how Japan can contribute in this field.

Japan Education Forum (JEF) has been held thirteen times since it started in 2004 and provided an opportunity for open and honest exchanges of opinions and ideas by officials in the public sector, practitioners of international development and NGOs, and scholars. Through discussions, new issues and challenges overlapping with domestic ones were identified. While the amount of ODA is decreasing, agendas have become diversified. We need to go beyond international development aid and mobilize new actors and construct new modalities to achieve SDGs including Education 2030.
